The Walking Dead Season 5: Are the People at Terminus Cannibals?

After following Michonne (Danai Gurira), Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs), and Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) to Terminus, we spent nearly half of the Season 4 finale in this largely unknown place. And despite spending more time there than we ever expected to, we still know very little about this mysterious locale and the people who inhabit it.

In last Sunday’s Episode 15, Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun), Tara Chambler (Alanna Masterson), Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz), Dr. Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt), Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos), Bob Stookey (Larry Gilliard Jr.), Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green), and Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) all “arrived” but judging by the fact that they had their stuff stolen by the people of Terminus and were all being kept in a dark train car, we can’t say that it’s worked out that well for them do far.

The silver lining is that by the end of the finale, “A,” most of Team Prison was reunited in that train car and, as Rick said, “They’re screwing with the wrong people.” But who are the people who reside at Terminus? They’ve trapped our survivors and we heard troubling screams from other train cars in the finale, so they’re not great, but are they actually cannibals as we’ve long suspected?

TVLine asked comic book creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman that question right off the bat in a post-Season 4 finale chat and this is what he had to say: “There are a great many number of possibilities for that storyline and who those characters are and what they’re doing, and that is certainly one of them. It’s not completely out of the realm of possibility, but I can neither confirm nor deny anything at this time. Who the people of Terminus are and what their deal is will be dealt with fairly quickly when we come back for Season 5.”

The whole cannibal idea stems from Robert’s TWD comics, which do feature a group called The Hunters, who turned to cannibalism in order to survive. So are Carol, Beth, and the others currently roasting on the barbeque? Maybe, maybe not, Robert notes with a laugh. “It’s entirely possible. I’m stopping myself from making very horrible jokes. We’ll just have to see. It’s certainly fine for people to speculate.”

In a separate interview Robert explained to TV Guide, “The Beth BBQ question is a big one. I've seen that a lot on Twitter. When a theory is as prevalent as that one is, it's more than likely not true. If there ever was a storyline where we were going a different way and the audience seemed to be ahead of us to that point, it would be extremely unfortunate and I would certainly not feel too good about how well we're doing our jobs. Thankfully this doesn't seem to be the case.”

Phew. So it sort of doesn’t seem like Beth will be featured on the Terminus menu anytime soon, but we’re still not doubting that this new group likes to snack on human flesh. At least until it’s proven otherwise. Do you think the citizens of Terminus are cannibals, or are we jumping the gun here? Tell us your thoughts and theories below!

The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October 2014 on AMC.
