The Walking Dead Season 5 Premiere Ends With “Very Special Surprise” — What Is It?

Who doesn’t love a very special surprise? The Walking Dead Season 5 will officially arrive in our homes on Sunday, October 12, and not only will it be epic, disturbing, intense, and all of these other adjectives, it will leave us with a little Cracker Jack prize at the bottom. Or something.

The cast and producers were just at Comic-Con, doing tons of interviews in addition to the main panel, and here’s a little exchange during Entertainment Weekly’s talk:

Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes): "The first episode this season, I think because we start at a cliffhanger, I think it's the most complete first returning episode I've ever read. It's got more action than the prison, the taking of the prison [in Season 3]. I think it tracks the story, the characters so well. And also there's a very special surprise at the end."

Gale Anne Hurd (Executive Producer): "There sure is.”

Huh. The way he says “very special surprise” leads our hopeful minds to think maybe it’s not a bad surprise. Not like Hershel-meet-katana surprise. Maybe someone pops up in the end? Maybe it’s a surprise like how the Season 5 Comic-Con trailer seemed to end … and then the Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) trailer began? Or a time jump from Episode 1 onward? A lot of fans seem sure it's a reunion — Rick/Judith, Daryl/Carol, etc. — but is that really a surprise when they already showed the characters together in the trailer?

Very special surprise… At this point, we’re not sure what the surprise might be, especially since everything we’ve heard about Episode 1 sounds special and surprising. How do you single something out?

Do you have a theory about the special surprise? Maybe the surprise is that the episode continues for another hour! DO IT!
