Vampire Diaries Season 5 Premiere: What Happened to Matt?

Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) has been a somewhat minor character throughout the first four seasons of The Vampire Diaries — but things are about to change. Season 5 is billed as being a pretty important one for Matt, our favorite Mystic Falls Grill employee. Not only did he just get back from a whirlwind summer with Rebekah Mikaelson (Claire Holt), but he’s going to be major player this year, interacting with a new face, Nadia (Olga Fonda).

Matt met Nadia during a super sexy evening in Prague with Rebekah. The two lovebirds got all tangled up with the sexy Russian beauty in a threesome (yeah, you heard us correctly). But that won’t be the last of Nadia that we’ll see this season.

Back in August, executive producer Julie Plec told MTV’s Hollywood Crush that, “[Nadia] will find her way to Mystic Falls under mysterious circumstances and with a mysterious agenda, and she will be providing a lot of story conflict and it will be very exciting. I think that in the beginning she's got a mystery attached to her that brings her into play with Matt a lot, but not necessarily romantically — and then as we move forward we'll see."

Well if tonight’s premiere is any indication, Nadia definitely has plans for Matt. We saw him meet up with her in an alley and get knocked out by some warlock guy. All we heard was a chant and then Matt’s eyes went black. What happened to Matt? Here’s our best guess:

We’ve seen that black eye thing before — back when Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) turned off his humanity switch and became “The Ripper.” Maybe whatever spell was cast over Matt is going to make him give up his good guy routine and get all Rippery? Even if that’s wrong, it’s pretty clear that he and Nadia are going to have an interesting relationship this season — and we can’t wait to see what happens next! At least Matt was wearing the Gilbert Ring, so we know he isn't dead.
