The promo starts with a recap of the final scene from the Season 4 finale, with Silas’ reveal that he originated Stefan’s hero hair because Stefan is his “shadow self.” Then, Silas punches Stefan, locks him in a box, and pushes said box into a water-filled quarry - because this town is only big enough for one head of hero hair.
The first new footage shows a happy Elena in her dorm room with Caroline and a second roommate we don’t know. Based on the serious glare Caroline is sending in stranger-roomie’s direction, she is none too pleased that Bonnie is too busy being dead to fulfill Caroline’s dream dorm situation and is totally taking it out on their poor, unsuspecting roommate.
Elena, on the other hand, is too in love to glare at anyone. She’s on the phone, chatting it up with boyfriend Damon. “Look at you, giving it the old college try,” he says to her, on the phone at the old Salvatore estate. (Cue shot of Elena and Caroline having fun at some college party involving a bonfire. Looks exactly like the Mystic Falls high school parties to us.)
“So, me being here, you being there. This might actually work?” Elena asks Damon. Damon answers in the affirmative as Katherine appears at the Salvatores, looking like she had a rough first summer as a re-human. “It’s been a long summer, Damon,” she confirms.
Next comes a montage! Jeremy beats someone up in the school hallway, Damon welcomes Silas as Stefan back to Mystic Falls (so many levels of awkward), and Katherine makes herself at home in the Salvatore bathroom (and invites Silas as Stefan to join).
“I’ve got this feeling like something bad is about to happen,” Elena says to Damon (you must always have this feeling, Elena). Damon tells Elena: “Trust me. You have nothing to worry about.” Aw. That’s heartwarming, but totally untrue.
Next, we see Silas as Stefan seemingly taking Katherine up on the bathtub invitation. “Human looks better on you than I would have thought,” Silas as Stefan tells Katherine (you gotta love ancient vampire flirtation), and he moves in for the kiss.
In the next sequence, Silas as Stefan is asking Damon, “You think something’s very wrong, don’t you?” Has Damon stopped feeling awkward for having successfully stolen his brother’s girlfriend and moved onto the suspicion that the face under this hero hair might not be his brother’s at all? In Damon’s usual style, he has a quip for every possible occasion (seriously, he should work for Hallmark): “If I have to hear the word “doppelganger” one more time, I’m gonna have to learn how to spell it.”
The promo literally ends with sparks, as we see a car crash into telephone pole. Judging by an earlier shot of Jeremy and Elena driving in a car together, it is most likely the Gilbert siblings who are its unlucky occupants. Per the usual, it seems like we are in for an awesomely explosive ride in Season 5 of TVD!
