The Vampire Diaries Season 5: Silas vs. Stefan — Which Doppelganger Is Better?

We’d watch Paul Wesley as any character. Luckily, in Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries, we kind of have been able to. Paul has been taking turns playing both eternally-tortured vamp Stefan and smarmy Big Bad Silas, and it has been great. However, in the most recent episode of TVD (Season 5, Episode 6: “Handle With Care”), Silas met an unfortunate end at the hands of his beloved Amara. So in honor of the snarky warlock, we’re debating the age-old question: which doppelganger is the better one?

The hair

What is a doppelganger battle if not a judging of hairstyles? For Katherine and Elena, it is the curly vs. straight look, but with Stefan and Silas, we have to get more particular as Silas has spent much of his time in Mystic Falls impersonating his hero-haired doppelganger. So, for the purpose of this convo, we’ll compare Silas’ Ancient Greek to Stefan’s more modern tufts. Actually, this does end up being a curly v. straight comparison, but - unlike Katherine - we’re not sure if Silas can quite pull off ringlets. Who are we kidding? Stefan’s hair wins every time.

Winner: Stefan

The attitude

When it comes to attitude, Stefan and Silas seem to have a distinctly different outlook on life. While Silas more-or-less seems to have an optimistic, go-get-em perspective, Stefan spends much of his time guilty over the things he’s done, constantly brooding in an attempt to stave off his blood lust. We hate to say it Stef, but your ancient progenitor has a way better attitude than you.

Winner: Silas

The superpowers

What is a supernatural creature without his superpowers? Both Stefan and Silas have an impressive array of supernatural ability in their arsenal. Like all vampires, Stefan ha superhuman strength and speed. He also has the ability to compel non-vervained humans into doing his bidding. Silas, on the other hand, has uber-compulsion and the ability to read minds. Also, it seems now that he is mortal again, he also has access to some witchy powers (like the awe-some ability to open curtains with his mind). This is a tight race, but we think Silas has the edge with his mind-reading. It’s certainly proved dominant in Mystic Falls.

Winner: Silas

The romance

Both Silas and Stefan have been part of an epic love affair, but who is the better boyfriend? Stefan is a pretty awesome boyfriend. Not only was he always loyal and loving to Elena, but he respected her decisions enough to let her die. As for Silas, he has loved Amara for an impressive 2,000 years, but, as he was also the worst boyfriend ever to Qetsiyah (he stood the girl up at the altar), we’d have to say he’s only 1 for 2 in the boyfriend department.

Winner: Stefan

Though Silas and Stefan are neck-and-neck when it comes to sheer on-screen enjoyment factor, we have to give the moral edge to Stefan. However broody he may be at times, he is a good friend, boyfriend, and brother. And, as he stumbled onto the scene first, he’ll always be our first doppelganger love.

Ultimate Winner: Stefan
