Luckily, her friend/love interest Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) has the handy skill of being able to see and talk to those who have crossed over. Jer has been helping Bonnie convince her loved ones that she is still alive and kicking — but how long can they keep the charade going? Bonnie and Jeremy discuss that very subject in this tantalizing Season 5 premiere sneak peek.
In the clip, Jeremy is sitting in a (seemingly) empty high school classroom, chatting with Ghost Bonnie. It seems Jeremy has been the keeper of Bonnie’s cell phone, responding to texts all summer. The most recent is from Caroline, who is wondering when Bonnie is going to show up to college.
“Caroline says, ‘Get your ass to Whitmore, Bonnie. We need you,’” Jeremy reads aloud to Bonnie, who tells him to tell Caroline she is hanging at the Grand Canyon. A likely excuse!
Jeremy is skeptical: “You realize you’re just postponing the inevitable, right? What happens when your dad finds out you’ve been dead all summer?” (And this is why we love Jeremy — he calls people on their issues.)
In typical Bonnie fashion, she avoids the larger problem at the heart of the question (i.e. that she won’t be able to keep this up forever), and argues that her father hasn’t called or sent any postcards. As for Elena, Bonnie tells Jeremy, “I just saw her at college. She seemed genuinely happy. I am not taking that away from her … We’re lucky, Jer,” Bonnie ads, putting her hand on his arm. “How many people die and still get to talk to their best friends?”
Jeremy looks pointedly at her hand, and says, “How many best friends can’t feel each other.” And, it’s kind of awkward. Because they totally love one another, but can’t touch. Jeremy (thankfully) cuts off the tragic awkwardness because, “the freak who faked his own death can’t also be late for math.” So, that’s how he’s playing this whole “died for a few weeks” thing. God, we’ve missed this show.
