Game of Thrones Season 5 Speculation: Will We See Flashbacks?

One storytelling device that’s never been used on Game of Thrones is the flashback, which is interesting since the past, especially Robert’s Rebellion, plays a huge part in the A Song of Ice and Fire book series. Names like Rhaegar Targaryen, Lyanna Stark, and Howland Reed pop up a lot more in the books than they do in the show, but could that change in Season 5?

Now that Bran Stark has reached his destination at the cave of the Three-Eyed Raven, he doesn’t have much book material left to cover in Season 5. A good way to fill his time would be for him to explore his powers by looking into the past, of which we’ve already caught a brief glimpse of when he saw Ned Stark in the crypts at Winterfell. Utilizing flashbacks through Bran would be a great way for the flesh out the backstory of everything that’s going on, and is an idea that Sean Bean, who portrayed Ned Stark, fully supports.

Further evidence for Season 5 flashbacks comes in the form of supposed casting leaks that call for Maggy the Frog and two young girls, one blonde and one brunette. In the books, Maggy the Frog was a fortune teller who gave an influential prophecy to 12-year-old Cersei (our young blonde) and Malera (her brunette friend). If these casting leaks are true, then it definitely looks like we’ll be getting at least one flashback in Season 5!
