Pretty Little Liars Season 5 Spoilers: Director Teases Aria’s “Incredible Journey”

It sounds like our girl Aria (Lucy Hale) is in for another transformation in Season 5 of Pretty Little Liars, and we can’t wait to see it! What did director Joshua Butler tease about Aria’s storyline in the upcoming season?

“Day 3 directing #PLL 5x07: You'll be dazzled by @LucyHale's incredible journey as Aria this season. #DirectorPride,” Joshua tweeted, along with a photo of Lucy on the phone as Aria on the PLL set. We have to admit: we’re eager to see how Aria grows in Season 5. Though we weren’t huge fans of the storyline that revealed Ezra as a true crime novelist who has been spying on the Liars for the past few years (both for his book and, in his eyes, their own safety), it does have the potential to act as a powerful catalyst for Aria’s character. Where will she go from here? Will she be able to work through her complex, tangled feelings concerning Ezra? And what does she want for herself moving forward? These are all questions Season 6 will hopefully explore.

Presumably, it will also explore the ongoing Ezria relationship. ABC Family released this Ezria-centric promo for the upcoming season. If this trailer is anything to go by, Pretty Little Liars will be pushing the Ezria romance hard. We’re not sure how we feel about this, given everything we now know about Ezra’s character, even in the wake of the gunshot wound he took for the Liars in the Season 4 finale. However, we’re willing to see it play out. Pretty Little Liars has always respected its characters, and has always made the Liars’ identities separate from their love lives just as important as the exploration of whom they are currently dating — a tactic unfortunately all-too-rare on TV drama, especially those geared towards young woman. We trust you, PLL. Don’t let us down.

What do you think Aria’s storyline will look like in Season 6? What do you want it to look like? How do you feel about the Ezria romance moving forward? Sound off in the comments below!
