Game of Thrones Season 5 Spoilers: What Happens to Varys?

Season 4 of Game of Thrones was light on Varys (Conleth Hill). The Master of Whispers wasn’t too involved, but he did play a big part in the finale, when he helped rescue Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage). We last glimpsed Varys hopping on a boat with the halfman to parts unknown, so where does he end up in Season 5?

Warning! This article contains spoilers from the A Song of Ice and Fire series. Click away now if you don’t want to know!

Will he appear? In the books, Varys actually doesn’t appear at all in the next two books in the series until the epilogue of the final published book, A Dance with Dragons. But that epilogue is a big deal: he reveals his master plan!

However, Varys also doesn’t board the boat with Tyrion in the books, so odds are we’re not going to have to wait that long to see Varys... or hear his plan.

So, what' s the plan? Varys’ plan revolves around returning the Targaryens to the throne, but not the Targaryen you think. In the books, it's revealed that Aegon Targaryen, one of the children of “You raped her! You murdered her! You killed her children!” fame was actually swapped out with another baby and smuggled out of King’s Landing before the Mountain had a chance to kill him.

Aegon has been raised in Essos for the past seventeen years, groomed by Varys and his coconspirator, Illyrio Mopatis (the guy who helped arrange Dany's marriage to Drogo) to be a perfect king. In the books, Tyrion ends up in Pentos at Illyrio’s estate, where he is sent to find Dany with some new companions. Tyrion figures out that one of his new companions is none other than Aegon himself. Since Varys appears to be accompanying Tyrion in the show, we won’t be surprised if Varys just straight up tells Tyrion about Aegon.

We’re not sure what else the show will have Varys do in Season 5, but it’s likely that most of his moves will revolve around finding ways to put Aegon on the throne.

Will he get back to Westeros? Of course, that's all assuming Varys doesn't hop off the boat somewhere. Whether or not Varys makes it to Essos, if the show wants to continue to follow the books where this eunuch is concerned, he will have to make his way back to King's Landing eventually.

See, in the books, Varys reveals his plans in a very bloody way: by killing Grand Maester Pycelle and Kevan Lannister (Tywin's cousin, an actually reasonable Lannister who steps in to help rule once Cersei starts getting out of control). He does this not out of anger, but because Kevan and Pycelle are doing too well as leaders, and he needs King's Landing in disarray to make it easier for Aegon to take over. However, we're not sure if the show will get this far in Season 5 or not, since it is the very end of A Dance With Dragons.
