Vampire Diaries Season 5 Spoilers: Paul Wesley on New Dynamics, Power Shifts, and Mortal Katherine (VIDEO)

When we last left Stefan Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries Season 4, he was trapped at the bottom of a quarry while his doppelganger Silas returned to Mystic Falls. When the show returns in October for Season 5, things won’t be that much different, but portrayer Paul Wesley had a lot to dish about the dynamics and power shifts of the new character interactions.

During an on-set chat with TV Fanatic’s Jim Halterman, Paul revealed that there were a lot of challenges in juggling two different characters this season — namely not making Stefan and Silas too different.

“[There’s] temptation to sort of make Silas wildly different, and I didn't want to make him all of a sudden have some weird accent or walk differently just for the sake of differentiating them,” he revealed. In turn, he was hyper-aware of “their similarities, but also their differences,” ensuring to “really distinguish them and not make a show of it.”

Meanwhile, Elena’s doppelganger Katherine is now human, which makes for some big changes. “She doesn’t have the same pizazz,” he said with a laugh. “She’s a mere mortal… like us!” Though he wouldn’t say which character interacts with her, promos have shown some flirtation between Silas and Katherine (with her naked, no less).

Paul also noted the “power shift” and dynamic changes between Silas and Damon, saying he is no longer treated like “the little brother,” but instead like Damon is the little brother. While he wouldn’t elaborate on that, he did mention that if and when Stefan breaks out, he’ll first and foremost want to feed, then he’ll discover if he’s still a “moral Stefan” or a new guy.

“He’s kind of finding out he’s not the person he once was,” Paul teased ominously. We can’t wait to find out his new identity — and hopefully soon. Apparently there are some flashbacks that “may or may not be hallucinations,” and we’re worried about the trapped vamp!
