In the books, Quentyn is Oberyn Martell's nephew. He's the son of Oberyn’s older brother and Prince of Dorne, Doran.
Shortly after the events of Robert’s Rebellion, which was when Elia Martell and her children were murdered, an agreement was made between the Martells and the surviving Targaryen caretakers to wed Viserys Targaryen to Doran’s daughter, Arianne, when they came of age. Arianne is now of age, but Viserys is dead, so Doran comes up with the idea of sending Quentyn to Meereen with the written agreement, under the assumption that Dany will honor it by marrying Quentyn.
Quentyn’s not exactly a looker (he’s no Daario), so when he makes it to Meereen Dany says, “thanks, but no thanks.” Eager to prove his worth to Dany, Quentyn decides he’s going to tame one of her dragons. He breaks into the dungeon where Viserion and Rhaegal are chained and they torch him before escaping. Quentyn dies, and we are all left wondering what the purpose of his arc was.
Even with the appearance of a (possibly faked) audition video, we’ll be a bit surprised if Quentyn makes it into the show. Of all the new characters introduced in the next two books, he seems like one of the easiest to cut. But if he does make it in, it implies that the showrunners know something we don’t about the Martell’s plans...
