The Walking Dead Season 5 Spoilers: Terminus’ Charred Bodies — Flashback Story? (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

The Walking Dead Season 5 is now filming in Georgia, and they should be a couple of days into the second episode right about now.

Last week, when they were still working on the premiere, fans reported hearing explosions on set, and on May 17 The Spoiling Dead wrote, “We posted a pic the other day of the tanks picture here. They were making them look old a rusted. Kim has provided us with a video of the aftermath. The explosions heard were from these tanks. The burnt spots are charred body parts.” You can watch the video at the bottom of this story. The site also shared this compilation of photos of the charred bodies that followed the tanks exploding:

What’s going on at Terminus? Have Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and company already put up a good fight and made a great escape or … something else?

At the risk of adding another failed theory to our list, we’re officially throwing down the guess that the Season 5 premiere will include a flashback to tell the Terminus origin story, explaining all the holes in the walls, the smoke covering the brick, the busted cars, and why they set up that candle room.

At the end of Season 4, Robert Kirkman told TVLine, “Who the people of Terminus are and what their deal is will be dealt with fairly quickly when we come back for Season 5.” Showrunner Scott Gimple told TV Guide, “The truth of what those people are about will come super quick. When people tune in in October, they're not going to have to wait a super long time to find out what they're about.” Scott also suggested to The Hollywood Reporter that the candle room represents something that happened to the people of Terminus. “We will get more of that in episode 501,” the showrunner said. “It looks like a memorial, and they could be super weird people who memorialize people they victimize, or it could be that something happened to them.”

It’s possible the charred bodies shown above are the people memorialized in the candle room with the little tokens on the floor. (See Terminus video from Season 4 finale below, beneath the on-set video.) We may see some of those people in action before they’re killed, however that happens, around watching Rick peek out of his train car door.

Or that could be way off. We do know Rick peeks out the train car door, since that photo was already released, but there’s no context for it yet. We’ve been guessing that TWD Season 5 will keep us at Terminus for several episodes in the first half, so it would be a surprise to see a huge stand taken after one episode, but for all we know they are telling the story out of sequence. The first episode is already done, so they seem to be filming in order, but they may start with how Rick’s group gets out, then tell the story in nonlinear fashion.

But for now we’re standing by the guess that the explosions, screams, and maybe even the walkers that were mentioned on set are all related to a Terminus origin story told via flashback at the start of the season.

What do you think? What explains the explosions and charred bodies at Terminus? Flashback? Flashforward? Real-time with Rick’s group, and/or Carol and Tyreese?

The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October on AMC.
