The Vampire Diaries Season 5: Are You Team Silas or Team Tessa?
In Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries, we’re in the unique position of having two dueling villains to choose from: Silas (Paul Wesley) and Tessa (Janina Gavankar). The two are in an epic battle for revenge, with our TVDers caught in the crosshairs. Without taking potential collateral damage into account, which villain are you rooting for? Are you Team Silas or Team Tessa?
Team Silas has the distinct advantage of literally having a face we already know and love (though, that reasoning hasn’t stopped us from hating Katherine in the past). We can understand where his motivation comes from: Tessa killed his one true love, then left him to rot for 2,000 years. He also happens to be “devil that we know,” so to speak. Though we have just met Tessa, we have been hanging out with Silas since last season. Sure, he’s been a jerk, but we’ve had a lot of fun watching him pretend to be Stefan and manipulate the entire town. He is even quite civilized — if not a bit snobbish — when it comes to how he operates, tending to leave his dinners alive. As a vampire — excuse us, warlock — that’s gotta count for something, right?
While Team Silas has the familiar face, Team Tessa has alliteration on its side (makes for better t-shirts). It also happens to have a super powerful and determined witch as its captain. Seriously, we’re not sure if it’s wise to bet against a woman who has been plotting Silas’s destruction for 2,000 years.
While Silas has another purpose — to somehow reunite with his long lost love — Tessa is all about revenge, and that kind of single-mindedness is pretty scary. Morally, neither Tessa nor Silas is exactly in a Mother Teresa class, but we can understand why Tessa is so angry with Silas. Though we think she may have overreacted a bit, tricking someone to fall in love with you just to get them to make an immortality spell for you and your girlfriend is pretty low. Even before we heard Tessa’s side of things, we thought Silas’s part in the original story seemed pretty terrible. And Tessa’s total acceptance of her irrational, crazy side is kind of refreshing. She knows she’s obsessed, and she’s not apologizing for it!
