Game of Thrones Season 5: What Happens to Brienne?

When we last saw Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) on Game of Thrones, she was tantalizingly close to “rescuing” Arya Stark from the Hound. Arya got away, but Brienne is still in the Vale, which is where Sansa Stark is currently conducting a tour. So, what’s next for Brienne in Season 5?

The A Song of Ice and Fire books provide some clues.

Brienne’s storyline is one of the most difficult to predict based on the books. In the books, Brienne does not encounter Arya or the Hound. Instead, she hears rumors of the Hound raping and pillaging his way through the Saltpans. If this doesn’t sound like the Hound, it’s because it’s actually Rorge, who’s wearing the Hound’s helmet. The show has already killed off Rorge, so consider this storyline cut.

Meanwhile, Brienne wanders around following several false leads while she runs into a bunch of people who have little effect on the overall story, namely: Samwell Tarly’s dad, a guy named Hyle Hunt, who joins her party (and whom she hates since he was a jerk to her back in Renly’s camp), a monk who tells her at great length the story of the Hound’s “death,” and eventually she comes across Rorge and Biter. She kills Rorge, but Biter gets the best of her until he’s killed by Gendry and the Brotherhood without Banners (oh yeah, Gendry’s still with them in the books). Again, the show probably isn’t likely to include any of this due to the changes that have already been.

The one part that we think, or at least hope, the show keeps in is how Brienne’s story concludes. After being captured by the BwB, she is taken to their new leader, who just so happens to be the reanimated corpse of Cat Stark, Lady Stoneheart. Stoneheart is a cold, revenge-driven being, out to take down anyone associated with the Red Wedding or the Lannisters.

Stoneheart considers Brienne an oathbreaker for her cavorting with Jaime Lannister, and orders her hanged. While hanging, Brienne agrees to retrieve Jaime for Stoneheart, and when we last see Brienne she is leading Jaime to her. Seems like bad news to us...
