The Walking Dead Season 5: What Does the Writing on the Wall at Terminus Mean?

Oh, Terminus. What are you and how will you shape Season 5 of The Walking Dead? We still have a ton of questions about you, but luckily showrunner Scott Gimple appeared on last Sunday’s episode of Talking Dead and attempted to explain some things in a bonus clip from the show below. More specifically, a viewer called in and wanted to know what the “creepy writing” on the wall in the candle room at Terminus meant. From what we can tell the wall said, “Never Again. Never Trust. We First, Always.”

“It would seem that it indicates — and it’s in a room full of candles with a lot of names painted on the floor and a lot of memorial objects there — that something bad happened. It seems like something bad happened!” Scott exclaimed.

But, in all fairness, Scott reminds us that we don’t know anything about this “bad” event… at least not yet. Many people have surmised that the folks at Terminus are cannibals and therefor must be the bad guys, but Scott is encouraging fans to keep an open mind. “They did pass a pile of bones. Again, it seems that something bad might have occurred,” he admitted.

Speaking specifically about that mysterious candle room he continued, “It seems that something bad happened to them, because that was their place. But those bones, maybe that’s something that happened to them or maybe that’s something they did to someone else.”

Hmm. We see what you did there, Mr. Gimple. He spoken about this important Terminus distinction before — are the people there really bad or did something awful happen to them? — and the more we think about it, the more we believe it may be a combination of the two. Let’s get real, there’s definitely sketchy stuff going down at Terminus (why else would they steal people’s possessions and lock them in train cars?) but it’s also likely that some tragedy befell them, hence the memorial of sorts that is the candle room.

Do you think there’s more to these Termites than meets the eye, or are they just bad news? Check out the full video and tell us your thoughts below!

The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October 2014 on AMC.
