Vampire Diaries Season 6 Is “Scaling Back” the Big Bad: “It’s A Long, Slow-Burn Mythology”

Season 6 of The Vampire Diaries is as much a reset for its fans as it is for its characters. The show seems to be taking on a whole new tone in the upcoming season, including “scaling back” on the Big Bad and committing to a “slow-burn mythology.” What else did executive producer Julie Plec tell E! Online about Season 6?

"There is a big bad. it's a long, slow-burn mythology that will unfold over the course of the entire season and will really impact each of our character in deep ways and it's smart and it's interesting and it's small, which I like," Julie teased. "Instead of trying to top ourselves year to year, we try to scale back and see if we can keep it really personal and rooted in character."

We are 100 percent on board with this strategy. As much as we enjoyed Season 5, it was missing some of the long-earned character moments and personal villainy that has defined TVD’s best seasons.

We’re also curious about Julie’s definition of the Big Bad as something that will develop over the course of the season. Mostly because, when the new character of Tripp (Colin Ferguson) was first announced, he was billed as a villain. Now, we’re not so sure where the militia leader will fall on the good guy-bad guy spectrum. With this additional tease, we’re thinking Tripp might be more of a short-term obstacle for our friends, if an obstacle at all. We imagine the season’s Big Bad will be much bigger and much badder than a man Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) sees as a sort of father figure. But, you never know. The banality of evil, etc.

Who do you think this season’s Big Bad might be? How do you feel about a scaling back of story? Sound off in the comments below!
