Glee Season 6: FOX Chairman Defends Last Year’s Double-Renewal

FOX execs made a surprising decision last year when they decided to renew Glee for not one but two seasons before Season 4 had even ended, and after months of record low ratings for Season 5 it’s looking like last year’s gamble hasn’t exactly paid off.

Season 6 — the show’s last — is expected to premiere in 2015 and will likely have a reduced episode order, but FOX is excited about it nonetheless. In a conference call with various outlets prior to yesterday’s upfronts, FOX Chairman Kevin Reilly reflected on last year’s choice to renew Glee for two seasons at once, calling it a “business decision”.

He explains via The Hollywood Reporter, “We sat down creatively and heard where it was going, and we thought that there was a creative, compelling reason to do it that way.” Of course, no one could have predicted the upsetting death of series star Cory Monteith (Finn) from a drug overdose last summer. His untimely passing altered the course of the show’s fifth season (and the series as a whole) which Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy has addressed in the past.

But despite the difficulty of these last few months, longtime gleeks will tell you that the show definitely found its groove again in the later half of Season 5, and even the execs are understandably excited about the upcoming sixth and final season.

“Ryan has a really good beat on where the show is going to be,” Kevin explains. “It will be its last season for sure. When it comes back in the second half of the season, they will also air all of their episodes in a row.”

A “good beat” and no hiatuses?! It may be tough to wait until 2015 for some new Glee, but when it returns we’re holding out hope that it will be better than ever!
