The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Does Not Take Place in Mystic Falls
The Season 5 finale of The Vampire Diariesintroduced so many game-changing elements to the series, it was hard to keep track of just what will stick for Season 6. Luckily, we’ve got this nice, long hiatus to sort out just where our heroes will be and what they will be up to when TVD returns to the fall. Hint: It won’t be Mystic Falls.
Well, at least not for the supernatural element of our cast of characters. It seems that the magic-free bubble the Travelers erected in Mystic Falls proper is still active, even though the fang gang managed to take out most (all?) of the Traveler clan. As TVD executive producer Julie Plec explained to The Hollywood Reporter: “The magic bubble, so to speak, that sits over Mystic Falls still exists, so they literally cannot go home again. That's a big theme of the early part of the season: How can we bring our heroes and our friends back together, and how can they find their way back home, literally and figuratively.”
Season 6 will pick up more than a few months following the events of the Season 5 finale, which has given the characters time to accept (or not accept) the new realities of their lives. Julie teased that the beginning of the new season will have much to do with exploring the new lives these characters have created for themselves in the wake of the Season 5 finale tragedy: “Where are they living? What are they doing? How are they acting? And how are they going to find a solution to this circumstance that the Travelers created for them?” Julie asked. “It seems fairly permanent. With the time jump, they've had to come to terms that it is permanent. Who's going to fix that problem and how?”
