Vampire Diaries Season 6 Spoilers: Elena’s Post-Damon Life Is “Complicated”

What can we expect from Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) in Season 6 of The Vampire Diaries? Well, as Nina told Parade, things are complicated in the wake of Damon’s apparent death — and that may make for the most interesting Elena character arc yet.

When asked what she wanted to see happen for Elena in the upcoming sixth season, Nina responded: “I’d like to see how she copes and deals with things post-Damon and see how she’s going to be able to move on and if she’ll have a normal life. Everything in Elena’s life is complicated, it’s never easy, everyone’s dying around her.”

In many ways, TVD has been one, long exploration of grief and what it can do to a person. This story has Elena at its center, initially introduced as a teenaged girl struggling to deal with the deaths of her parents, but no character on this show has been spared from losing someone they love — including, in some notable cases, him or herself in the transition from human to vampire. Nina is right in categorizing Elena’s arc as “everyone’s dying around her” because watching TVD is watching Elena getting repeatedly punched in the gut with the deaths of the people she loves most. It’s how she responds to these losses that defines how she has changed (or not changed) as a character.

This is why we agree with Nina that seeing how Elena responds to Damon’s death, and if she is able to go on and live a “normal” life (whatever that means for a vampire — or person), is the big question of the Season 6 premiere for us. How has this latest loss changed Elena as a character? And will she be able to move past it?

How do you think Elena will deal — or not deal — with the death of Damon? Share your theories in the comments below!

The Vampire Diaries Season 6 premieres on October 2 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
