Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 Finale: Meredith and Derek Spoilers Roundup
Though nine seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd have been through a lot. They’ve nearly died many times, saved each other’s lives, fought, split up, gotten married, and after a long road (and a miscarriage), adopted a beautiful daughter named Zola. Now Mer is pregnant with their son and ready to pop, but naturally, it can’t be an easy path to the delivery room, either.

In this week’s Season 9 finale (Episode 24: “Perfect Storm”), she’s going into labor — but when the power at Grey Sloan Memorial goes out, the baby must be delivered via C-section... in the dark! We were already worried, but this new intel has us freaking out. Will the MerDer baby be safe? And more importantly, what about Meredith and Derek separately? This time last year, they were left for dead after a plane crash, which resulted in the death of her sister (Lexie Grey) and Derek’s best friend (Mark Sloan).
Here’s everything we know about both parents and baby. Check out our spoiler roundup below!
Her baby must be delivered in the dark. As if Mer wasn't scared enough about giving birth, she ends up having to have surgery in the dark. The operating room is lit only by flashlights, and when her son is born, he isn't crying. Oh no! This power outage leaves the NICU without ventilators, so if her baby is in danger, she’ll have to breathe for him. (Cue the sobs.)
Could Meredith die? The synopsis says someone “fights for their life" in the finale, and with Meredith in childbirth, we can’t help but worry that she’ll be the one go potentially go. However, one spoiler hints that we should be more worried about the person delivering Mer’s baby. Could that be Cristina? Or maybe Shane, who we see in the promo?
There may be a happy ending. Though we’re worried, creator Shonda Rhimes has hinted that there will be “some joy” and that the birth of their son is a “really beautiful story.” Maybe she and the baby will be OK?
The finale will be a “home run.” According to Meredith’s portrayer, Ellen Pompeo, the finale is a “home run.” Other co-stars have called it “thrilling” and “exciting,” so it can’t be all bad. Shonda wants fans to talk about it “all summer long,” so it could end on a cliffhanger, though. Hopefully not involving MerDer!
