As it turns out, not everyone is in love with Selena Gomez as much as we are.

E! Online is reporting that the “Love You Like a Love Song” singer requested a Russian visa because she has two concerts scheduled in the country later this month, but was denied. Since she won’t be able to enter Russia, Selena has been forced to cancel the concerts.

But why exactly have officials from the nearly-frozen Eurasian nation rejected Justin Bieber’s former boo?

According to The Moscow Times, Selena’s pro-gay rights stance may have cost her entry into the country. In recent months Russia has been restricting performers who speak out in favor of gay rights.

In 2012 both Lady Gaga and Madonna took the stage in Russia and voiced their support for the country’s gay community. In fact, both musicians were subsequently threatened with prosecution for not obtaining the correct visas.

Selena had previously been scheduled to perform at St. Petersburg’s Ice Palace on September 23 and Moscow's Olimiisky stadium two days later, but her rep is now confirming that the 21-year-old can leave her mukluks at home in sunny L.A. because she won’t be venturing east.

Author and gay rights activist John Becker explained to E! why the once communist nation is afraid of Selena’s arrival, notting, “They're afraid to have someone like Selena Gomez come in and potentially use her platform to advance LGBT rights.” Before her appearances were called off, John started a petition encouraging the singer to support Russia’s LGBT crowd. So far that petition has received 8,422 signatures.
