Shailene Woodley: “If I Didn’t Have Acting, I Would Be Just as Happy”

Shailene Woodley may have just finished a multi-season run on a hugely popular TV show in addition to starring in Oscar-nominated movies like The Descendants, but in her mind, she's just a regular girl. A regular girl who got to hang out with George Clooney on a movie set for months.

In the August issue of Marie Claire, the Secret Life of the American Teenager star reveals that, despite her career success, she'd be just as happy doing something a lot less glamorous.

"I don't use [the word 'celebrity'] to describe myself. In high school, a lot of my friends didn't know I was an actor because I didn't talk about it," explains Shailene, who picked up shifts at American Apparel between seasons of her show. "They would come to school and be like, 'Wait, were you on My Name is Earl last night?' It was something I kept under wraps because I did it for myself and not for anybody else."

While she's already working on movies including The Fault in Our Stars and Divergent, she admits that she'd be fine giving it all up.

"I struggle in real life trying to balance my natural connection to the earth and the somewhat materialistic side of the industry I am in… If I didn't have acting, I would be just as happy," says the actress.

"I would probably be an herbalist, or maybe I would open a fruit stand on a Hawaiian island."
