Watch Shanon Wilson Sing “I Want You” in the American Idol 2014 Premiere (VIDEO)

It’s been a long, hard hiatus since Candice Glover was crowned the winner of American Idol Season 12. Thankfully, our favorite music competition returned tonight (January 15), and we met a whole new crop of hopefuls looking to become the country’s next big superstar!

Kicking off the latest tour of the United States, Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and new judge Harry Connick Jr. headed for Austin, Texas and Boston, Massachusetts. (Of course, Ryan Seacrest was also there to provide much-needed commentary.)

It’s in Boston where the judges meet Shanon Wilson, a former defensive tackle who gives Ryan a run for his money. He may be able to push the 5’9” Seacrest around the waiting room, but can we actually sing?

As a matter of fact, he can. When he opens his mouth to deliver a smooth rendition of “I Want You” by Luke James, the judges are completely blown away by his range.

The other judges don’t even have a chance to give comments before J.Lo holds up a golden ticket. “What? No key change?!” jokes Keith.

What do you think of Shanon’s performance? Will he make it to the Top 31? Read our spoilers here!
