Grey’s Anatomy Creator Shonda Rhimes Reveals Her First Job — Madonna Inspired It!

With a monopoly on ABC's Thursday nights this fall — Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder will all air back-to-back — producer Shonda Rhimes is a legit queen of TV. But her work was not always so glamorous!

Yes, we all have to start somewhere, and the 44-year-old creative mastermind is revealing her first job in the September 2014 issue of Marie Claire. And you might be interested to know that Madonna inspired her first buck...

"I was 16 and had been volunteering at the local hospital," Shonda recalls. "One day, I wanted a miniskirt and a hot-pink, off-the-shoulder top. (It was the '80s, and I wanted to look like Madonna.) My mother told me that I could wear trashy clothes when I had my own money. So I got a job scooping ice cream at Baskin-Robbins."

And she only went up from there — thanks, perhaps, to her dad's wise words, which she tells Marie Claire was the best career advice she's ever received: "My father told me that the only limits to your success are in your imagination."

And, on a more frivolous note, can we all just agree that Arizona Robbins's last name must be a tribute to Shonda's career beginnings? Now we're hungry…

Grey's Anatomy Season 11 premieres Thursday, September 25, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
