Grey’s Anatomy: Shonda Rhimes Mediates Fans’ Twitter War With Isaiah Washington

Drama, drama, drama: Did you really think Isaiah Washington could return to Grey’s Anatomy as Preston Burke without it? Despite the fact that Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) says it’s “all good” having Isaiah back on set, many Grey’s fans beg to differ — and they are quite vocal about it.

If you recall, Isaiah didn’t exactly leave the show on the best terms. Not only did he leave Cristina (Sandra Oh) at the altar, but the reason behind it was because he got fired for using anti-gay slurs on set. Unsurprisingly, this irked a lot of fans, and now that Isaiah’s back, they’d rather he just stay in syndication.

The responses to Isaiah’s tweets about being back on set ranged anywhere from “Nobody likes you” to expressing their distaste for a homophobe being welcomed back to Grey’s with open arms… and Isaiah responded in kind.

“You are an unfortunate waste of your daddy’s sperm,” Isaiah said to one Grey’s fan. “You are an idiot, and I’m sure your parents are not aware of the profound ignorance and hate you represent. #Fail,” he said to another.

Before too long, creator (and all around mom of the Grey’s fandom) Shonda Rhimes stepped in to play referee. “Question: Is he being horrible to actual lovely wonderful FANS?” she asked. “Or is he just being mean to people who are mean to him?”

But once Shonda was informed that the majority of the people Isaiah was directing his sass toward were teenagers, she changed her tune. “WOW! I didn’t know that! Thank you. That is good info to have,” she said. “I don’t know if most of us know that you all are teenagers!”

While it’s never fun to receive insults, we’re less than impressed with Isaiah’s behavior. Teenagers or not, we would have preferred to see him take the high road and ignore his naysayers altogether. Whether we like it or not, Burke is back — let’s just try to separate the character from the guy who plays him and enjoy our last few episodes with Cristina.

Do you think fans are overreacting, or should Isaiah never been asked back?
