Should Ben Briley Have Gone Home On American Idol?
We called it yesterday and, despite host Ryan Seacrest saying Ben Briley’s American Idol departure would be shocking to viewers, we think it was anything but. We love Ben and he’s definitely talented but, unfortunately for him, he had his biggest misstep Wednesday night while everyone else seemed to have finally come into their own.
We do agree with judge Keith Urban, however, that song choice can be extremely challenging for these folks, as the judges always tell contestants to make their own picks while also staying true to who they are. The two goals can often feel at odds, particularly when you throw in the week’s particular (and often constraining) theme.
The thing about changing things up the way Ben did with his Elton John song this week is when these singers do decide to take a musical risk, they have to nail it. Unfortunately, Ben’s rendition of “Bennie and the Jets” came off as karaoke at best.
This week’s bottom three wasn’t all that shocking either, although we did predict Sam Woolf would be the winner as of last week and there he was in the bottom three alongside Ben and Majesty Rose. Say it ain’t so! Again, though, Sam tried to switch things up this week with “Come Together,” and he seemed awkward as he tried to move around on stage. He’ll need a bit of practice in that regard but we still believe in our Sam, particularly since he has a whopping 38,300 Twitter followers — the most of any Idol hopeful this season.
The cold, hard fact is social media is a powerful part of shows like this and Ben didn’t have the online following to withstand two off weeks in a row. Alas, we do think it was his time go, although we’ll miss that country boy.
