CBS Drama Series Rips THIS Glee Story From the Headlines — Too Much?

If you happened to catch CBS’s legal drama The Good Wife on Sunday night, you probably noticed the show featured a storyline that felt very familiar. Series like Law & Order often feature plots lifted directly from the headlines, and The Good Wife just did the same thing with a recent Glee controversy.

The January 5 episode, “Goliath and David,” centered around Alicia (Julianna Margulies) representing a singer whose acoustic-style rap song was used on a Glee-alike TV show without his consent.

Back in January of last year, Glee performed a unique, acoustic version of Sir Mix-a-lot’s “Baby Got Back.” There was just one problem,: the arrangement was identical to one created by Jonathan Coulton. Now, JoCo wasn’t well-known in the mainstream at the time, but he had a very passionate fan following online. And he and his fans were not happy.

They also got in touch with my peeps to basically say that they’re within their legal rights to do this, and that I should be happy for the exposure (even though they do not credit me, and have not even publicly acknowledged that it’s my version – so you know, it’s kind of SECRET exposure),” he wrote at the time.

The Good Wife’s version featured a similar scenario, but this time with a song called “Tricky Trick,” which is also an acoustic-style rap tune, and features familiar sounding lyrics like “well, mama got back.” And the colorful show choir stage and sparkly performance dresses? They look straight out of an episode of Glee.

What do you think about The Good Wife’s Glee homage? Are you excited to see the show get a pop culture shoutout, or do you not really like seeing it mined for story ideas (and sort of mocked in the process). Head below and let us know what you think.
