Sia’s Catchy New Track “Chandelier” Meant for Rihanna — What Happened?

Welp. It looks like we’ve found the next big glittery pop track — but there’s a bit of a catch: it’s not by Katy, RiRi, or Gaga. Though it was intended to be for Rihanna, before the writer took it for herself...

Originally penned for the “Diamonds” singer by Sia, the Australian singer/songwriter actually decided to keep the track for herself — and it might end up being your new favorite song.

“My friend Jesse Shatkin and I were jamming in the studio,” Sia said during an interview with On Air With Ryan Seacrest. “I was playing piano and him on the marimba — and this gem popped out.”

Entitled “Chandelier,” the new cut is party-girl-pop to the core, but plays tribute to old school glamour in a way that would have fit seamlessly alongside tracks from Baz Luhrmann’s music-driven 2013 film interpretation of The Great Gatsby. The opening vocals even sound like Rihanna, so we could see how RiRi would’ve done it justice.

"I usually think, 'Oh this would work for Rihanna, or this would be a good one for B or Katy,'" Sia told Seacrest. “But this time I was like, 'Uh oh I think I just wrote a full-blown pop song for myself by accident!’”

According to, “Chandelier” is only the second original track released by Sia since her 2010 album, We Are Born. The first was “Elastic Heart,” which she contributed to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Soundtrack (alongside Diplo and The Weeknd) in 2013.

Check out the song and tell us in the comments: would Rihanna have done a better job singing “Chandelier” or did Sia make it your new go-to track?
