Sixteen Candles: Molly Ringwald Almost Lost the Role of Samantha to Which Other ‘80s Star?

If you’re a fan of the ‘80s teen classic Sixteen Candles — and who isn’t?! — you probably would have a pretty hard time picturing someone else in the lead role other than Molly Ringwald. As the always-passed-over high school sophomore Samantha, the angsty redhead played the part to iconic levels.

But did you know that the role almost wasn’t hers? Yep, Molly almost lost out on the part to one of her fellow teen stars. But which other in-demand actress almost snagged the game-changing role: Ally Sheedy, Demi Moore, or Brooke Shields?

Wetpaint asked Viggle LIVE! users that very question during last weekend’s airing of Sixteen Candles, and it seems like you all know your John Hughes trivia!

An impressive 56 percent of voters knew that Molly’s future The Breakfast Club co-star Ally Sheedy also auditioned for the part. Meanwhile, 28 percent thought that model-turned-actress Brooke Shields was the star in question, and only 16 percent guessed that fellow Brat Packer Demi Moore was up for the role.

Though Molly beat out Ally for the chance to kiss Jake Ryan (sigh!), one year later the two shared the big screen in The Breakfast Club as the popular princess and silent weirdo, respectively. We think the casting directors made the right decision!
