Skins US co-creator and head writer Bryan Elsley has finally made an official press statement concerning the controversy surround the US version of the show. And we think he hits all the right points in his defense. Here are the highlights:

Skins is NOT just about showing teens taking drugs, having sex, and misbehaving.
Said Elsley, “Skins is actually a very serious attempt to get to the roots of young people's lives. It deals with relationships, parents, death, illness, mental health issues, the consequences of drug use and sexual activity. It is just that these are characterized from the point of view of the many young people who write the show and has a very straightforward approach to their experiences.”

Elsley’s main point here is that Skins is meant to be a truthful story told as by young people still traversing the gray areas between childhood and adulthood. In other words, these characters are not adults nor are they meant to act like them. Rather, the teen stories on Skins reflect all the real behavior of teens today, not just the good.

Skins does not suggest that bad behavior has no consequence.
“Consequences do flow from incorrect or selfish behavior but in the show, these are shown to be unexpected, hard to predict, and more to do with the loss of friendship than anything else, which in any context, is a disastrous outcome.”

Skins is “not careless.”
Elsley says, “Our approach is not careless. We've created a supportive and protective environment for everyone working on the show. And, of course, abide by the law, and give respect to our work colleagues who in this case, are young energetic and exciting people with so much to offer to an imperfect world.”

We were very glad to see this statement. Bryan Elsley has always given every indication of being a very thoughtful person — especially for a television producer — whom we imagine could not have been anything but very disturbed by some of the allegations thrown at his show. And we hope this puts some of those concerns to rest!
