SNL Hires Sasheer Zamata — First Black Female Cast Member in 7 Years

After critics leveled harsh feedback at Saturday Night Live this fall for the lack of diversity within its female cast (and some poorly articulated remarks by current cast member Kenan Thompson the reason for that), the 39-year-old sketch comedy show has hired Sasheer Zamata to join the cast, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The comedian, who hails from New York, is the first black woman to join the cast since Maya Rudolph ended her tenure in 2007. There were reports in December that the show’s powers-that-be held secret auditions, with 11 black women vying for a spot in the cast. However, Sasheer wasn’t among those who tried out in Los Angeles.

Nevertheless, we’re sure Sasheer’s going to make a refreshing addition to the show. She’s funny, sharp, and — like many of SNL’s funniest cast members of yore — a former member of the Upright Citizens Brigade.

Sasheer will join the cast immediately, first appearing when it returns from holiday hiatus on January 18. While it’s her first stab at live television, she’s definitely no stranger to sketch comedy. Before her latest role, she appeared as a regular on Inside Amy Schumer, a sketch comedy series on Comedy Central.
