Orange Is the New Black Snubbed at SAG Awards: What Gives?!

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are one of the few times when TV shows can get credit for the strength of their entire ensemble's acting, instead of just the performance of one or two key players, thanks to the "Outstanding Performance By An Ensemble" categories. And as anyone who's watched Netflix's groundbreaking Orange Is the New Black knows, while each individual actress brings a lot to the table, the sum of the ensemble is even more fantastic than its parts. So surely this buzzy, fantastic show earned itself a spot on the nominees list, right?

Orange Is the New Black, which straddles the line between comedy and drama with every episode, submitted itself as a drama. Maybe that was where it went wrong, though really, drama or comedy, it seems clear to us that it deserves a nod.

The shows that got nominated in its stead were Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, and Homeland. Those are all good shows which have garnered lots of awards attention. They all have strong casts. But do they all use their ensembles as well as Orange Is the New Black?

Not if you ask us. Some do Game of Thrones is a fantastic example of another show where the cast as a whole just blows us away week after week — but some don't, in part because they aren't as ensemble based. Shows like Homeland and Breaking Bad feature a lot of talented actors, but the standout performances belong to a few primary characters who carry the main weight of the story, unlike a show like Orange Is the New Black, where the ensemble as a whole has a lot to do every episode.

What do you think: Was OITNB totally snubbed, or do you understand why it was passed over? Sound off in the comments below.
