Auditions are over on Season 11 of So You Think You Can Dance, but next week the competition heats up at Callbacks. While in previous seasons, the first-round hopefuls have converged on Las Vegas for a grueling week of dance drills and devastating cuts, this year the next round takes place in Los Angeles.

But just because this year’s callbacks are set in a cooler climate doesn’t mean the heat is less intense! Here are just a few reasons why you need to tune in.

The cream rises to the top. We love how eclectic and fun the audition performances are, but Callbacks is the portion of the competition when the real SYTYCD potentials starts to emerge. In past years, some of the most promising dancers from auditions haven’t been up to the challenge. Conversely, nearly every year a dark horse comes out of nowhere and makes us say, “Damn! Who is this chick/dude?” You’ll want to be there so you can say you knew the next winner when.

Duh-rama. Wanna know what happens when you get nearly 200 dancers into a large, sweaty auditorium and then drill them on dance styles they’ve never attempted before, sometimes for hours and hours on end? All the things. Blood, sweat, tears, vomit... i.e., total car accident television. It’s so great.

No more Mr./Ms. Nice Judge. Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy seem so sweet during auditions — unless you sass them, that is — but the kid gloves come off at Callbacks. It’s in part because this week is essentially dance boot camp. But aside from that, the biggest difference between Callbacks and Auditions is that literally everyone is super genius-level talented at Callbacks. You’re not special anymore, snowflakes. (Except for the 20 who show they really are.)

Anyway, it’s pretty fun watching that one vein pop out of Nigel’s head, and can we just talk about how great it is when jazz choreographer Sonya Tayeh unleashes a kracken of fury on dancers who aren’t trying hard enough?
