Nobody can dish out the tough love quite like Abby Lee Miller of Dance Moms.

The docuseries' inaugural season was a huge hit, and now, we can look forward to another season of Abby Lee’s ruthless banter. But who exactly is this no nonsense, quick-talking dictator of dance?

For over 30 years, Abby Lee has been the director of the Abby Lee Miller Dance Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company’s reputation within the dance competition circuit is unrivaled, with the exception of few other regional companies. Her students have gone on to dance on Broadway, Radio City Music Hall, Disney World, and a variety of other national and international stages.

Abby Lee challenges the moms of her students, claiming she’s the crème de la crème in the industry and knows what is best for her students. So, how did Abby Lee get to be such an authoritarian in dance?

She grew up training with her mom, Maryen Lorrain Miller. As a youngster, she followed her mom to dance conventions every summer and became fascinated with the competitive dance world. At only 14 years old, she formed the Abby Lee Miller Dance Company and, with dedication and determination, worked hard to establish one of the nation’s top dance competition schools.

Abby Lee never performed professionally, but claims she has no regrets on this decision. “I hate to be onstage; never enjoyed performing — that’s one reason why I am a great teacher … I don’t envy or compete with my students. My dreams for them are sometimes greater than their own but never confused with mine.”

Be sure to check out Abby Lee as she goes head to head with Pittsburgh’s stage mamas, on January 10, 2012 at 9 p.m. ET for the Lifetime Network’s premiere of Dance Moms Season 2.
