Emma Stone Sounds Off on Body Image: “Be Kind to Yourself”

The more often Emma Stone finds herself in the spotlight, the more she has to deal with criticism. And not just on the acting roles she chooses — but on her body, too. Now, Emma’s speaking up about those who insinuate that her naturally skinny stature must mean she’s dealing with some serious issues behind the scenes, and why she doesn’t let it get her down.

“Keeping weight on is a struggle for me, especially when I’m under stress, and especially as I’ve gotten older,” the Amazing Spider-Man 2 actress shares with Seventeen. “So when completely untrue statements about me or my health, of course a part of me wants to defend.”

Which is totally a natural reaction to have. When you consider how critical we can all be of our own bodies, it’s amazing that Emma — and so many other celebrities — has found ways to stop letting what people say get to her.

“I remind myself to be kind to myself, and as slightly ridiculous as it may sound, to treat myself in the same gentle way I’d want to treat a daughter of mine,” Emma says. “It really helps.”

And in the meantime, we’ll be over here, completely jealous that Emma can eat as much pizza as she wants with no negative consequences on her weight whatsoever. We’ll trade you!

“My great hope for us as young women is to start being kinder to ourselves so that we can be kinder to each other,” Emma adds. “I hope we can be supportive of each other and try to really have each other’s backs, especially when we don’t know the whole story.”

Preach it, girl!
