Yes, and the guilt is eating her alive. We don’t necessary think of Melissa as a guilty person. She tends to feel justified in her actions — even if they involve murder or mayhem. But we have to admit her behavior this season has been an excellent impersonation of someone struggling with at least a smidgen of guilt, and we think it might be because she killed Bethany Young. Let’s look at the facts:
— Spencer found Melissa’s helmet at the barn Mrs. DiLaurentis used to bring Bethany to, implying that the two knew one another.
— When Mr. Hastings was convinced Spencer killed Bethany, Melissa was confident her sister did not, seemingly whispering the name of the true culprit into her father’s ear. Since then, the two have openly acknowledged they share a terrible secret.
— Melissa was furious with Ali the night of Bethany’s death, spending the night looking for her. Bethany presumably looked like Ali. Melissa could have attacked Bethany thinking she was Alison.
Basically, it’s not looking good for Melissa Hastings.
No, but she is protecting whomever did. Of course, a viable alternative is that Melissa was not the person who killed Bethany, but that Melissa knows and is protecting whoever did. If Melissa did know Bethany, then it stands to reason that she might be able to figure out who would want her dead. It is even a possibility that Melissa was there when it happened. The question then becomes: who would Melissa risk everything to protect. We’re reasonably sure it’s not Spencer. Could there be another Hastings sibling we don’t know about? Was it another DiLaurentis that committed the crime? Could Wren somehow be involved? It’s hard to imagine who both had a motive to kill Bethany and who would warrant Melissa’s silence.
