The Vampire Diaries Speculation: Was Silas’s Epic Love the Original Petrova?

The Season 4 finale of The Vampire Diaries ended with a game-changing twist: Stefan is Silas’ doppelganger. Prior to this reveal, we assumed that there was only one line of doppelgangers: the Petrova line (i.e. the Elena model). Now, we know there is a second, descending from Silas (i.e. the Stefan model). Could there have been a connection possibly of the romantic variety between the progenitors of the bloodlines, i.e. were Silas and the Original Petrova an item? We speculate below!

Silas’ backstory

Way back when, Silas was a powerful warlock intent on making himself immortal. He asked his BFF Qetsiyah, a powerful witch, to help him out. Qetsiyah agreed because she was in love with Silas and thought he would make her immortal as well so they could not grow old together forever. If only.

It turns out Silas was in love with someone else, and wanted to make her immortal instead. As you may imagine, Qetsiyah did not take this revelation well, killing Silas’ lover, creating a cure for immortality, and imprisoning Silas with it in an underground cave until the TVD gang dug him out last season. Way to go, guys.

Tatia’s backstory

Tatia, aka the Original Petrova, has been mentioned, but never seen on TVD. During the Middle Ages, she pulled a Petrova and got brothers Klaus and Elijah to fall in love with her (despite the fact that gasp! she had already given birth to a child out of wedlock).

There was obviously something special going on with Tatia, and we’re not just talking about her big brown eyes and her feminine wile. Esther Mikaelson used Tatia’s blood both in the spell that created the original vampires (aka the Mikaelson family) and the spell that bound Klaus’ werewolf side. So, her blood has some kind of powerful magical properties.

Doppelganger coincidence? We think not!

It seems awfully unlikely that there would be two lines of doppelgangers that have absolutely no relation to one another. That kind of magic happens rarely as in, twice ever so it makes more sense that it was the same spell and place that started both doppelganger lines. The story goes that Qetsiyah killed Silas’ lover in punishment for his seeming betrayal, but we call shenanigans! We think doppelganger-dom is some kind of by-product of the immortality spell, which would mean that the Original Petrova (even if it wasn’t Tatia, as has been assumed thus far) was Silas’ epic love.
