Game of Thrones Speculation: Will Bronn Betray Tyrion?

On Game of Thrones, Bronn (Jerome Flynn) and Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) have been the best of friends since they met back in Season 1. However, Bronn is a sellsword, motivated by money above all else. With Tyrion behind bars, it doesn’t seem like their friendship is as beneficial to Bronn as it once was. Will he eventually turn against Tyrion?

In the books, Bronn does turn against Tyrion during his trial just like everyone else. While he doesn’t testify against Tyrion like some other people (cough, Shae, cough) he chooses not to help him when given the chance.

When Tyrion learns that Cersei will choose the Hound’s brother, the Mountain, as her champion in a trial by combat, he asks Bronn if he will be his champion. Bronn says no for a couple of reasons. One, Cersei has granted him a marriage to the pregnant Lady Lollys Stokeworth (a character not on the show), which gives Bronn a bit of power and wealth. Also, Bronn isn’t so sure he could take the Mountain, and he’s not willing to risk finding out. So Bronn can’t really be blamed for not helping Tyrion, he’s stuck between a Mountain and a hard place. He does tell Tyrion that he hopes things turn out alright for him, and he even names Lollys’ baby “Tyrion” as a tribute to his friend (or to irk Cersei, which is still a tribute to Tyrion).

On the show, things might play out differently. The two are even closer in the show than in the books, with Bronn helping Jaime and also gifting Tyrion’s ax to Pod, so we don’t really see Cersei arranging a marriage. We think that Bronn won’t want to fight the Mountain because he doesn’t want to get killed and that’s it, for which Tyrion won’t really be able to blame him.

After that, we’re guessing Bronn follows Jaime and continues his training, replacing Ilyn Payne from the books, whose character has been retired from the show.
