It sounds like Matt and Katherine will be spending some time together early on in Season 5. According to the Episode 2 synopsis, “After learning that Silas is searching for Katherine, Damon asks Matt and Jeremy to keep her out of sight.” So, technically, Katherine is hanging with both Matt and Jeremy, but as Jeremy already has a ghost girlfriend (and was recently killed by Katherine), we assume he’ll be less vulnerable to her charms. Matt, on the other hand, can be pretty forgiving when he wants to be, especially when thrust into danger with the subject in question. It sounds like dire circumstances might arise, as the synopsis states, “the situation quickly spirals out of control.” Story of TVD’s life.
She looks like Elena — aka Matt’s first love!
We’re still not convinced Matt is completely over Elena — or, at least he might not have been last time we saw him. The boy was willing to let Elena drink his blood regularly and willingly let Damon snap his neck in an attempt to turn Elena’s humanity back on. That’s some serious commitment. Now, it’s obvious that Elena and Katherine are very different people, but they do have the same face. That’s gotta be a distinct advantage for Katherine in winning some people over in a town that loves her doppelganger.
Matt is a nice guy
Not so long ago, Rebekah was an emotionally-vulnerable vamp wishing she were human who Matt hung out with because he’s a big softie. Now, they’re just back from a romantic summer abroad. If Rebekah epitomizes Matt’s “type,” then Katherine fits perfectly. She’s not a vamp who wishes she were human, but she is a human who wishes she were a vamp — which, in our estimates, isn’t so far off. We also imagine she’s pretty emotionally-vulnerable after a summer of trying to adapt to eating food and wearing sunscreen.
They’re both human!
On a show increasingly populated by vampires, werewolves, and hybrids, Matt and Katherine are two of the only humans left. We kind of feel like Katherine should be in her own category, considering she’s lived for hundreds of years, but she’s technically human again. If anyone can commiserate with her about the struggles this bring and, more importantly, demonstrate the ways in which it is awesome, it’s Matt. Plus, if their relationship works out, they can grow old together — you know, if they don’t get their necks snapped first.
