Breaking Bad Spin-off: Will Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul Star?

Whenever Sunday night rolls around, we find ourselves itching for the latest hit of Breaking Bad. Then, suddenly, we remember our supply’s been cruelly cut off. The AMC show came to a close on September 29 with a series finale worthy of its own special chain of rehab facilities.

Thankfully, however, Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan knows we can’t go cold turkey after five seasons of pure BB. He’s decided to take the leap and make a spin-off.

“There’s obviously a danger inherent in doing a spin-off,” Vince tells The Hollywood Reporter, “but I just love the character of Saul Goodman [Bob Odenkirk] so much, and part of me doesn’t want to say no to this world.”

Even better news: Better Call Saul will likely feature cameos by star characters Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul).

Familiar faces may be some of the only similarities between Breaking Bad and its spin-off. As a prequel, the show will predate most of the events chronicled on the original. It will also be set in an office and have a more light-hearted tone than Breaking Bad’s acidic drama. Although originally imagined as a 30-minute show, Vince says he finally realized it wouldn’t be enough time.

“We’re both one-hour drama guys,” Vince says of himself and showrunner Peter Gould. “So we figured, ‘Why not shoot Saul in the same way?’ Let’s shoot in Albuquerque, let’s get as much of the crew back together as possible, and let’s do it the way we did it before so that it will be of a piece with that pre-existing fictional universe that we had so much fun creating.”

Sounds like an empire worthy of Heisenberg.

The Better Call Saul pilot episode, directed by Vince, is scheduled to air on AMC sometime between August and October 2014. Are you excited or do you wish they’d let sleeping meth addicts lie? Sound off in the comments below.
