The Walking Dead Spin-Off Update: Co-Writer Announced

Progress! There’s finally some action happening with The Walking Dead "companion series" — aka spin-off — that's meant to show up in 2015.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, AMC has hired Sons of Anarchy's Dave Erickson to co-write and executive produce the spin-off. Dave was a writer and co-executive producer on SoA from 2008-2011. He also wrote and co-executive produced several episodes of AMC's Low Winter Sun, which co-starred TWD's own Lennie James (Morgan Jones). He also wrote/produced the 2008 Julianna Margulies show Canterbury's Law.

Original TWD producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, and David Alpert are also on board as executive producers. RK, who writes the ongoing comic book series, will also be writing the spin-off, but it's good that he'll have backup since he's incredibly busy with the main series (TWD Season 5 will start shooting soon and it premieres in October) as well as his other million projects.

When the spin-off was first announced last September, RK said in a statement, “After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

Hopefully the companion series/spin-off team is already hard at work. If AMC is looking for launch date ideas, may we recommend following the final season of Mad Men, which will most likely air from April to May/June 2015. Why not start the spin-off right behind it in June to fill the months we have to wait for the new season of the main show, which always premieres in October?

Are you excited to finally see wheels turning for this thing? When do you think we’ll actually hear plot details and even see sneak peek footage? In a few months? End of the year? Sound off below!
