The Walking Dead Spin-Off: Scott Gimple Thinks a Crossover Sounds “Awesome”
The Walking Dead spin-off isn't even a spin-off, it's a "companion series." Robert Kirkman mentioned before that the big difference is that AMC's new series won't be spinning off any of the characters from the original TWD show.
However, many fans think it would be cool to see some crossover between the two zombie apocalypse series and one of those fans is TWD's current showrunner, Scott Gimple.
Collider asked Scott for intel on the spin-off — which is still planned to premiere in 2015, as far as we know, even though we haven't heard much about it. But Scott isn't really involved in the spin-off, since his job is to focus on the series that's now filming Season 5.
"I have so little to do with the spinoff. I'm looking forward to watching it," Scott admitted, then added, "This I do know. It’s set in the world of The Walking Dead, but it's not like — from what I understand, it’s not like Daryl’s cousin or anything."
So no crossovers between the mothership show and the companion series?
"I would never say never," Scott cautioned, "because if I was a viewer I would say 'that sounds awesome.' But we’re doing our own show. I also think a crossover might be tough because it would take a lot of [license] within the comic story. We’ll see. When we get to [comic book volume] All Out War, who knows? We’ll add another faction. It’ll be the Saviors and the Hilltop and like the ‘Spin-offers’. [pause] That was a terrible joke."
Nah. The Spin-Offers sounds like a decent band name!
The entire TWD crew should be at Comic-Con later this month, and it would make sense if that's when Robert Kirkman and the producers shared companion series/spin-off updates. Maybe we’ll learn the location, which won’t be Georgia (like TWD) but could be literally anywhere else. And will it be a prequel, set in the future, or in the same time period as TWD? Will it premiere next summer, around this time, since that’s the Dead zone when we need more good zombie shows to watch?
These are the things we don’t know for sure, but it would be great to get those answers soon. Hint, hint!
The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October on AMC.
