And why? Because Ben plays the game so well? Because he gets more time with Desiree Hartsock than other guys on group dates? Because he can wear a blue Speedo on TV without a hint of shame?
If you’re Florida-based attorney Mike Garofola, the reasons for disliking Ben probably go on and on. And in Germany on Season 9 Episode 5, those hateful feelings will spill over into a 2-on-1 date, as well. When Mike and Ben are “gifted” the dreaded 3-person date — during which one guy gets a rose, and the other goes home — they head out, trapped in a hot tub boat, cruising around a lake in each other’s fluids.
What better time to bring up how much you hate someone than when the girl you're anglin' to marry is there with you, right Mike? At least, we’re assuming that’s his reasoning, because Mike goes after Ben super hard, calling him out for being an “absentee father” and comparing him to his own dad. “My father left my mother and I when I was young, and there were times when I sort of waited by the window for him to pick me up, and he never did...” Mike says, attempting to bait Ben into a fight.
To his credit, Ben seems to take the high ground, saying that while he and his ex “weren’t meant to be,” his son was fated to come into their lives, and he’s happy for that.
What happens in the end? Does he finally have enough of Mike’s thinly veiled smack talk and snap? Does Des get stuck in the middle of an awkward situation and eliminate herself by jumping into the freezing ocean instead of sticking around? Does Mike’s brother-from-another Mikey Tenerelli pop up out of the water to help Mike G double team the Texan?
According to Reality Steve, Ben’s silence costs him the rose, and Des gives it to his attacker instead. Are you surprised? Delighted? Still stuck on the image of cruising in fluids? Us too.
