Vampire Diaries Spoilers: New Big Bad Markos Introduced in Season 5, Episode 17

If we had one critique for Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries, it’s that there hasn’t been a real source of evil this season. Usually there’s a huge threat that our favorite Mystic Falls heroes are rallying against (Katherine, Klaus, Professor Shane, etc.), but so far Season 5 has been lacking in the villain department. Sure, we started off the season with Silas (Paul Wesley) wreaking havoc and Dr. Wes Maxfield giving us the creeps, but we find ourselves entering the back half of the season with no villain to look forward to — until now.

According to E! Online, there’s a new big bad on the horizon, and we even know the exact episode he’ll be introduced in. Look out for Season 5, Episode 17, because that’s when you’ll get your first glimpse of Markos, a “charismatic but imposing leader from a faraway land.” Exactly how far away? Like, another dimension or something?

“He’s super dark, but people can’t help but be drawn to him, and he’s worshipped by his followers,” the site continues. Geez, this dude sounds super creepy. What power does he have over his followers, and what is he doing or telling them to keep them loyal? And since his appearance is so far into the season, will he be a short-term villain or does he have potential to bridge into a possible Season 6?

We’re super excited to hear about the new big bad, but we need more info.

What do you think about Markos? Does he have what it takes to be the new big bad? Hit the comments and speculate away!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
