Glee’s Cory Monteith Tribute Spoiler Roundup: Season 5, Episode 3: “The Quarterback”

When Glee’s leading man Cory Monteith passed away suddenly on July 13, the show immediately began planning an episode dedicated to him, and to his character, beloved football jock Finn Hudson.

On Thursday, October 10, we finally get the chance to watch this highly emotional episode. Glee Season 5, Episode 3: “The Quarterback” will give fans one last chance to say goodbye to both Finn and Cory. We here at Wetpaint Entertainment have been keeping up with all the news and spoilers about the episode. Many of the details have been kept under wraps, but here’s your roundup of everything we know about it.

Official synopsis: “The McKinley High family, present and past, join together to remember and celebrate the life of Finn Hudson.”

When will it air? Thursday, October 10, 2013 at 9 p.m. on FOX.

Will Finn Hudson die? Yes. Glee creator Ryan Murphy confirms that Cory’s character will pass away.

Cory died of a drug overdose. Will Finn’s death be handled the same way? Fox president Kevin Reilly says that Finn’s death will “deal directly with drug abuse,” but creator Ryan Murphy later clarified that Finn will not die of a drug overdose. The show wants to bring awareness to the issues that led to Cory’s passing, though, so drugs might still factor into the storyline in some way. However, Finn’s cause of death will be intentionally left vague. If we do find out exactly how he died, it won’t be until later.

Will there be anti-drug PSAs? Yes. Glee creator Ryan Murphy, as well as a number of Glee actors, will all film drug-related PSAs to air alongside the episode.

When did it film? Filming started around August 16, about a month after Cory passed away.

How closely was Lea involved? According to Showbiz Spy, Lea played an important role in the planning and creation of the tribute for to her late boyfriend. "But most of all, Glee’s creative team is looking to Lea to give the final word on decisions that are being made,” a source told the site. “The meetings are lengthy and Lea is a part of them to make sure everything is just right."

Which graduated Glee characters are coming back? Amber Riley (Mercedes Jones), Harry Shum Jr. (Mike Chang), Mark Salling (Puck) will all be back, while Heather Morris (Brittany) and Dianna Agron (Quinn Fabray) won’t be there. Heather was heavily pregnant during the time of filming. Dianna has said that the show did not ask her back.

In addition, Jayma Mays (Emma Pillsbury), Dot-Marie Jones (Coach Bieste), Finn's mother Romy Rosemont (Carole Hudson-Hummel) and stepfather Mike O'Malley (Burt Hummel) will all be a part of the episode.

Once it airs, how long is Glee going on break? After filming wrapped, the cast and crew took a two-week break from filming to rest and emotionally recharge. This time also gave Glee’s writer a chance to figure out what direction to take the rest of the season now that Finn can no longer be a part of it. Episodes are expected to resume on November 7, 2013.
