The Vampire Diaries Spoilers: Delena Moment in Season 5, Episode 20 (PHOTO)

The Delena ship is definitely still sailing on The Vampire Diaries, but it’s taking on water. They may be unable to keep their hands off of one another, but both Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) acknowledge that their romance has turned co-dependent and destructive. But there could be a light at the end of the angst tunnel in the form of this photo from the set of Season 5, Episode 20.

“On May 1, 2014...#TVD 5x20 premieres. #DirectorPride,” director Joshua Butler tweeted yesterday, along with a photo of Damon and Elena in one another’s arms, their eyes locked. You just can’t keep these two apart, can you? Is this just another expression of their undeniable passion, or is it something more? It certainly seems like this moment is more romantic than sexual, but one can only glean so much from a photo of a camera screen.

Things are definitely skewing more sexual in this promo for upcoming Season 5 episodes (though probably not including Episode 20?). In it, we see Damon crowd Elena up against a school locker and tell her: “All I know, I want to rip your clothes off right here in the middle of this hall, throw you in one of these rooms, and kiss every square inch of your body.” That’s gotta be hard to resist. Though, Elena is doing an admirable job. Later in the promo, we hear her say: “You and I? We’re messy and complicated. That’s why I need you to let me go.” Yikes! Nina did describe the Delena relationship moving forward as “toxic.”

Can this Episode 20 scene make up some of the ground Delena has lost in recent episodes? We’ll have to wait and see — though the director seems pretty optimistic about it.

Do you think Delena is toxic? Do you think there is a way they can move forward in a healthy way? Sound off in the comments below!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
