Game of Thrones Spoilers: Does the Night’s Watch Win at the Wall?

Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 9, “The Watchers on the Wall”, features the big battle between Mance Rayder’s Wildling army and the Night’s Watch. The Night’s Watch are grossly outnumbered, 100,000-100, so they couldn’t possibly win... could they?

Honestly, this is kind of a trick question. The Night’s Watch don’t win, but neither do the Wildlings. So does that mean it’s a draw? Nope, Stannis wins. That’s right, Stannis Baratheon.

During the battle, the Night’s Watch are holding the Wall, but just barely. Mance and his forces, which includes giants, are pounding on the gates and it’s only a matter of time before they break through. In the books, just when things look the most bleak, Jon Snow is sent beyond the Wall by Janos Slynt to assassinate Mance Rayder, under the guise of treating with him. While Jon is debating whether or not he can kill Mance (he doesn’t want to), Stannis shows up with the whole of his army and takes out the Wildlings. Just totally breaks their ranks and they scatter. Mance is captured, and Stannis triumphantly sets up shop at the Wall, leaving everyone in a very interesting position for Season 5.
