Once Upon a Time Spoilers: Is Neal Alive? Michael Raymond-James Says…

Don’t you just hate it when you get shot by your deceitful fiance and fall through a portal to another world? It’s the worst, and it’s exactly what happened to Neal (Michael Raymond-James) in the penultimate episode of Season 2’s Once Upon a Time. Here’s what Michael had to tell Entertainment Weekly about Neal’s chances of survival and what he wants most of all:

“If there’s no body, then there’s no crime,” Michael joked about the concern over his character’s death, but the way he’s talking about Neal’s potential story arc has us thinking we haven’t seen the last of Rumple’s long-lost son.

Season 2, Episode 21: “Second Star to the Right” was also a big deal because Neal and Emma admitted they still loved one another (just before Neal was sucked through the portal, of course). Does Michael think there’s a happy ending for the star-crossed duo?

“It’s certainly possible,” said Michael. “I don’t want to be too committal about it, because I don’t want to paint myself or anybody else on the show into a corner. But I’m for happy endings, man, and I think Neal at this point is going to move heaven and hell to get back to where he wants to be, which is in a family. That’s something he’s always been searching for, and that’s the single biggest motivating factor for him — his son, more than anything. When he found out he had a son, that was the first time he had purpose in this world. Now he has the opportunity to be the dad he always wanted for himself.”

Aw. You gotta feel for a guy who has been by himself for most of the last hundred years or so. He just got something good (if not confusing) going on in Storybrooke, reunited with his son, father, and love of his life (okay, and fiance Tamara was there, too), only to have it ripped away from him. Again. This guy just can’t catch a break.

Even so, Neal continues to stay idealistic. Though he despises the corrupting power of magic, he does not join Tamara’s crusade to destroy it. Michael had this to say about Neal’s choice not to join Tamara’s mission: “I think Neal is a bit of an eternal optimist. And while he doesn’t like magic, there’s a big difference between dying for your cause and killing for your cause. Neal would never be able to get to that, to killing for a cause, where Tamara clearly can. But same for Rumpelstiltskin — he’s killed. I don’t think Neal sees the world that way.”

What can we expect from the season finale airing Sunday? Michael said that “a lot of questions that people have will finally get answers, or at least the beginnings of an answer. But a lot of those answers lead to more questions. So stay tuned — buy the ticket, take the ride.” If you insist!
