We’ll admit it: we’ve totally fallen under Steferine’s spell on Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries. The chemistry between professional brooder vamp Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) and 500-year-old vamp-turned-human Katherine Pierce (Nina Dobrev) was palpable in last week’s episode. But it’s not our fault! Turn’s out these two have been destined since Season 2!
TVD executive producer Caroline Dries dished Steferine backstory (and future) to The Hollywood Reporter. What deets did she spill?
“We've known since season two since they were first on-screen together, once she was established to him as a villain, that their chemistry sizzled,” Caroline said. “They just had a different feel than Elena and Stefan. There's an element of danger to it. There's intrigue. You know it's a no-fly zone but that's what makes you want it more. It finally felt earned in this moment because he needed someone and [even though] she's such a villain, but she opened up and helped Stefan. Even though she has a clear agenda, which is ‘I want Stefan,’ there's something lovable about her too.”
As far as agendas go, that’s a pretty good one in our books. And we totally agree with Caroline’s assessment that Katherine and Stefan have a totally different, but just as compelling vibe as Stelena — especially given their century-old history with one another. If TVD didn’t explore this relationship further, we’d be bummed. And it sounds like we’re not the only fans who think so.
“I think the audience has embraced Katherine even more this season because she's been so fun and fallible,” continued Caroline. “It finally worked in this moment. This episode will be about the fallout of when you sleep with the woman who has been your enemy for 150 years.” Our recommendation, Stefan: just go with it. And brace yourself for the 100th episode.
