For a guy who joined the “A” Team and disappeared into the night for the latter part of Season 3, Toby (Keegan Allen) has been getting some pretty incredible material in Season 4 of Pretty Little Liars. Keegan sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss what’s ahead for Toby, including his bromance with Caleb, his romance with Spencer, and his continuing search for the truth about his mother’s death.
We saw Spoby working together in last week’s episode (Season 4, Episode 6: “Under the Gun”). Will the couple continue to team up in future episodes? Yes! Keegan said Spence is still helping him search for information about his mother’s apparent suicide, but all the secret-keeping will continue to put a strain on their relationship.
“Toby has issues with his past still with his mother and they go on a sleuthing mission that is very intense for him to go through,” said Keegan. “For her to continue to keep this a secret from her friends is very trying on her relationship.” Yikes!
But Spencer isn’t Toby’s only ally. This week’s episode (Season 4, Episode 7: “Crash and Burn, Girl”) will see Caleb and Toby teaming up. What is their dynamic like?
“Normally you see these characters with their girlfriends and now we get to see a glimpse of them sans girlfriends, just completely free to be their own entity and on their own roads,” said Keegan of the Toby/Caleb relationship. He also spoiled that their storyline will have “something to do with planes,” which makes sense having seen this sneak peek. Caleb and Toby will be questioning Nigel Wright, Jenna’s date to Wilden’s funeral and, perhaps, a pilot.
Looking ahead to the summer finale (Season 4, Episode 12), Keegan said “it gets really crazy.”
“There's a shocking moment in it that all the fans will react — I don't even know how they'll react [to it],” said Keegan. “If there are people who have been following the show since the beginning it's one of those moments.”
